The most important region of Malabar in earlier times, Kozhikode. Calicut district is blessed with serene beaches, emerald green countryside, and historic sites is set with the Arabian Sea on the west and the Wayanad hills on the east.
Kozhikode was the capital of the powerful Zamorins and a major trade and commerce center as well. The city continues to be a center of flourishing domestic and international trade, being the marketing center for commodities like pepper coconut, coffee, rubber, lemon grass oil etc.
Kozhikode found a place in World History with the discovery of sea route to India by the Portuguese navigator Vasco Da Gama, who landed at the Kappad sea shore in 1498. A monument is constructed here to commemorate the historical landing.
